Selected Exercises and Solutions

Most chapters in Gravity from the ground up contain exercises, which are posed in the Investigations. These exercises do not need to be worked in order to follow our development of the theory of gravity at a general level, but readers who want a deeper understanding of what lies underneath some of our statements will find that doing the exercises is helpful. The exercises give readers a chance to learn actively, to think through an issue and create a solution. Some of them are easy and some very challenging.

This section of the website for Gravity from the ground up allows readers to download the solutions to most of the exercises. Solutions are omitted only for exercises whose solution is routine, or which require modification of the book’s computer programs.

The solutions are offered for the benefit of teachers who want to set the exercises as homework in their classes, and for students of gravity who want to check their own attempts at solutions. Readers are not encouraged to read the solutions before attempting to work them out themselves: there is considerable benefit in thinking through a problem, even if in the end the correct solution is hard to achieve. It is much easier to understand the solutions given here if the exercise has been attempted first without them. The solutions are offered for download as a pdf file. You may copy them freely for educational purposes, but not for commercial use. Please see the full copyright statement before downloading.
